On 05 August we WON our 1st LEGAL VICTORY!!!
The Honourable Judge Dlamini of the Johannesburg High Court ordered the City of Johannesburg, in conjunction with Pikitup, to conduct COMPREHENSIVE (active and passive) air quality testing, in and around the Kya Sands Landfill Site.
The results of this testing will show residents the TOXIC chemicals they are breathing on a DAILY basis!
This is the 1st step on our road to STOPPING the rampant and ILLEGALdumping and BURNING of TRASH at the Kya Sand dumping sites. We will be proceeding with further Court Action against the responsible authorities.
But the fight is not over yet. We need YOUR SUPPORT to help us in our battle! Your FAMILY's health is at RISK!
We are also working on new SOLUTIONS to solve this problem.

Do you ever smell acrid smoke in the air?

This TOXIC smoke is coming from the Kya Sand Burning Rubbish Dumps.
​
The posionous smoke is engulfing the surrounding areas including: Fourways, Fourways Gardens, Chartwell, Broadacres, Northriding, Northgate, Jackal Creek, Honeydew, Cosmo City and everywhere in between (check the map below to see if you are affected).
​
If you live in any of these areas then you and your family are being exposed to DANGEROUS and TOXIC fumes daily that are being released from the illegal, 24/7 burning of rubbish at the Kya Sand rubbish dumps.
The health of ALL residents in these areas is being affected by this POISONOUS and CARCINOGENIC smoke.
These health risks include: Headaches, Dizziness, Respiratory Disorders, Asthma, Developmental Disorders, Cancer, Immune System Suppression and Reproductive Disorders, among others.

Government inaction on this issue has forced us to take legal action to stop these activities.

Norton Rose Fullbright attorneys are representing us Pro Bono in our Court Application to force authorities to put a stop to this dangerous, illegal burning of waste.

The Plan
We will take a step by step approach to solving this issue using the legal system.
This will force action from the relevant Government Authorities:
1. Raise Funds
We need donations from the Residents of these areas to pay for Air Quality Tests to support our Court Application.

We have raised R101,000!

We have surpassed our goal of R77,000 thanks tou our Amazing Donors!!

2. Conduct Air Quality Tests
We are in the process of conducting official Air Quality Tests in the areas around Kya Sand.
​
Current air pollution levels are at an all time high in these areas.
​
This leads to SEVERE health problems within our communities.
3. Take the Authorities to Court
With the Air Quality Test results, our lawyers will mount a Court Application against the dump operators and the relevant government authorities.
​
This will lead to a Court Ruling to force the Authorities to Stop The Burn.
​
4. Stop The Burn!
A Court Ruling will compel the authorities take action and we will hold them accountable.
​
